Chapter 16

. I have told you all this, so that you may not fall for it

. For they will drive you out from their congregations; and the time will come, that whoever will kill you will think that he presents an offering to God

. And they will do these things, because they know neither my Father, nor me

These things have I told you, so when the time of them comes, you may recall that I told you of them. And I did not tell you these things from the outset, because I was with you

? But now, I am going to Him that sent me, and none of you ask me, where go you

. And because I have told you these things, sorrow has come and has filled your hearts

But I tell you the truth, so it is better for you that I go away, for, if I go not away, the Redeemer will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you

. And when he comes, he will prove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment

, Of sin because they do not believe in me
: and of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and you can see me no more
. and of Judgment, because the prince of this world is condemned
. I have much more to say to you, but you cannot grasp it now
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will lead you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak of everything he hears, and he will make known to you the things to come
. He will glorify me, because he will show you what he will take from what is mine
. All the Father has is mine, that is why I said to you that he will take of what is mine, and show it to you
. In little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me, because I am going to the Father
And his disciples said one to another, What is this that he says to us, A little while, and you will not see me and again a little while, and you will see me, because I am going to my Father
. And they said: What is this "little while" he is speaking about ? We do not know what he is saying
And Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, and he said to them, Are you asking one another about what I said to you, a little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me
Truly, truly, I say to you, That you will weep and lament: And while the world will rejoice, you will be in sadness. But your sadness will turn to joy
A woman in childbirth is sad because her delivery day has come, but when she has birth to a son, she does not remember her suffering, because of the joy that a man has been born into the world
. Even now you are in sadness, but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one will take from you of your joy
And on that day you will not ask me anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, That anything you will ask of my Father in my name, he will give to you
. Until now you have not asked anything in my name. Ask, and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete
I have been telling all this to you in parables, but the hour is coming when I will not speak to you in parables, but I will tell you plainly of the Father
; On that day you will ask in my name; and I do not say to you, that I will pray to the Father for you
. for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me, and have believed that I came from the presence of the Father
. I came from the Father, and have came into the world, and now I leave the world to go to the Father
. His disciples say to him, Now you are speaking plainly and not in parable
Now we see that you know every thing, and we do not need anyone to ask you questions: because of this we believe that you came from God
? Jesus said to them: Do you believe
Behold, the hour is coming, and has now come, when you will be scattered, each on his own, and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, for the Father is with me
. These things have I said to you, so you may find peace in me. In the world you will have trouble: but be brave, I have conquered the world

Chapter 17

After saying this, Jesus raised his eyes to heaven, and said: My Father, the hour has come: glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you

. As you have given him power over mankind, that he might give Eternal Life to all those you have given him

. And Eternal Life is this, that they may know you, that you alone are the true God, and of whom you have sent, the Messiah Jesus

. I have glorified you on the earth, and finished the work that you gave me to do

. And now you, my Father, glorify me, with that glory which I had with you before the world was

I have made your name known to the sons of men, those you gave me from the world, they were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word

. Now they have known, that whatever you have given me, was from you

For the words you gave to me, I have given to them; and they have accepted them, and have known truly, that I came from your presence, and they have believed that you did send me

. And I pray for them; it is not for the world that I pray, but for them whom you have given me, for they are yours
. And all that is mine is yours, and what is yours is mine; and I am glorified in them
From hereon I am not in the world, but these are in the world, and I go to you. Holy Father, keep them in that your name, which you have given to me, that they may be one, as we are
While I have been with them in the world, I have kept them in your name. Those you gave me, have I kept; and none of them is lost, except the son of the lost, so the scripture might be fulfilled
. But now I come to you; and these things I speak in the world, that my joy may be full in them
I have given them your teaching, and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world
, I do not pray that you would take them out of the world, but that you would keep them from evil
. for they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world
. Father, sanctify them through your truth, for your word is the truth
. As you did send me into the world, so, too, have I sent them into the world
. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth
, And it is not for them only that I pray, but also for those who will believe in me through their teachings
that they all may be one, as you, my Father, are in me, and I in you; that they, too, may be one in us, so that the world may believe, that you did send me
. And the glory which you gave me, I have given them, so they may be one, as we are one
I am in them, and you are in me, so they may be perfected into one, and so the world may know that you did send me, and so you have loved them, too, as you have loved me
Father, I want those you have given me may be with me where I am, so they may see the glory you have given me, as you loved me before the foundation of the world
My Just Father, the world has not known you, but I have known you, and these have known that you sent me
And I have made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you loved me may be in them, and I in them

Chapter 18

After this was said, Jesus left with his disciples across the Cedron riverbed, where there was a garden, into which he and his disciples went in

. And Judas the betrayer, too, knew the place, because Jesus often met with his disciples there

Then Judas took a detachment of soldiers, and from the chief priests and Pharisees he took some guards, and came to the place with torches and lanterns and weapons

? Knowing every thing that was going to happen to him, Jesus came forward and said to them: Who do you look for

. They said to him: Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus said to them: I am he. Now Judas the betrayer was also standing among them

. And when Jesus said to them, I am he, they moved back and fell upon the ground

. And again Jesus asked them: Who do you look for ? And they said: Jesus the Nazarene

; Jesus said to them: I have told you that I am he; and if you are looking for me, let these others go

. so to fulfill the words which he spoke: Of those whom you have given me, I have not lost even one
And Simon Kephas, who had a sword, drew it out, and wounded a servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And the servant's name was Malchus
? And Jesus said to Kephas: Put the sword back in its scabbard. Am I not to drink the cup which my Father has given me
; Then the detachment and it's officer and the guards of the Jews laid hold of Jesus, and bound him
. and they led him first to Annas, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year
. And it was Caiaphas who suggested to the Jews, "that it is better one man die for the nation"
And Simon Kephas and another of the disciples followed Jesus. And that other disciple was known to the high priest; and he went with Jesus into the palace
. But Simon stood outside the door, and that other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper and brought Simon in
. And the maid who kept the door, said to Simon: Aren't you another of this man's disciples ? And he said: I am not
Now it was cold, and the servants and guards had lit a fire and were standing there to warm themselves; and Simon, too, stood there warming himself
. And the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples, and about his teaching
And Jesus said to him: I have spoken openly among the people, and have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews assemble; and I have said nothing in secret
. Why do you question me? Ask those who have heard what I said to them: behold, they know what I have said
And as he said these words, one of the guards standing by gave Jesus slap in the face, and said to him: So you give such an answer to the high priest
? Jesus replied, and said to him: If I have spoken lies give evidence of those lies; but if rightly, why do you strike me
. Now Annas had sent Jesus still while bound to Caiaphas the high priest
And Simon Kephas was standing and warming himself; and they said to him: Aren't you another of his disciples? And he denied it, and said: I am not
? And one of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the one whose ear Simon cut off, said to him: Didn't I see you in the garden with him
. And again Simon denied it, and at that moment a cock crowed
And they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was now morning. They did not go in the Praetorium themselves, or they would be defiled before they had eaten the Passover
? And Pilate came forward to them outside, and said to them: What charge do you bring against this man
. They replied, and said to him: If he were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you
: Pilate said to them: Take him, and judge him according to your law. The Jews said to him: It is not allowed for us to put a man to death
. so the words of Jesus might be fulfilled, when he told by what death he was to die
? And Pilate went in the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus, and said to him: Are you the king of the Jews
? Jesus said to him: Do you say this yourself, or have others said it of me to you
? Pilate said to him: Am I a Jew? Your own people and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done
Jesus said to him: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have fought lest I be handed over to the Jews, but now, my kingdom is not from here
Pilate said to him . Then are you a king? Jesus said to him: You have said it, that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world, that I might bear witness to the truth. Everyone that is of the truth, hears my voice
. Pilate said to him: Truth ? What is that ? And as he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them: I find no case against him
? According to a custom of yours, I should release a prisoner to you at the Passover; do you want, then, that I release this king of the Jews to you
. And they all shouted out, and said: Not this man, but BarAbbas. Now this BarAbbas was a robber

Chapter 19

. Then Pilate had Jesus scourged

: And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they dressed him in a purple robe

. and they said: Hail, king of the Jews! and slapped him in his face

. And Pilate came outside again, and said to them: Behold, I bring him out to you, that you may know that I find no case against him whatsoever

And Jesus came outside while wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them: Here is the man

And when the chief priests and guards saw him, they shouted out, and said, Crucify him, crucify him! Pilate said to them: Take him then, and crucify him, for I can find no case against him

. The Jews said to him: We have a Law, and, according to that which is in our Law, he deserves death, because claimed himself the Son of God

. And when Pilate heard them say this, he was all the more afraid

. And he went back into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, Where do you come from ? And Jesus gave him no answer
? Pilate said to him: Will you not speak to me ? Do you not know, that I have the power to release you, and have the power to crucify you
Jesus said to him: You would have no power over me at all, if it were not given to you from above, because of this he who handed me over to you has the greater sin than yours
And for this reason, Pilate was wanting to release him. But the Jews shouted out: If you release this man, you are no friend Caesar's, for whoever makes himself a king, is an enemy of Caesar
And when Pilate heard these words, he had Jesus brought forward, and sat upon the chair of judgment at a place called the Pavement of Stones; but in Hebraic it is called Gpipta
And it was the eve of the Passover, and it was about noon. And he said to the Jews: Behold, your king
But they shout out: Take him away, take him away, crucify him, crucify him! Pilate said to them: Should I, crucify your king? The high priests said to him: We have no king, but Caesar
, Then he handed him over to them, so they might crucify him. And they took Jesus, and led him away
; carrying his cross to a place called the Skull, and in Hebraic called Gagulta
. where they crucified him, and two others with him, the one on this side, and the other on that, and Jesus in the middle
And Pilate also had an inscription written, and had it fixed to his cross. And so it was written: THIS IS JESUS THE NAZARENE, KING OF THE JEWS
And many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near to Jerusalem, and it was written in Hebraic and Greek and Latin
. And the chief priests said to Pilate: Do not write not that he is king of the Jews, but that he said I am king of the Jews
. Pilate said: What I have written, I have written
And the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes and made four shares of them, a share for each of the soldiers. And his robe was woven from the top throughout without a seam
And they said one to another: We should not tear it apart, but will throw the dice upon it for whose it will he. And the scripture were fulfilled which said: They shared out my clothing among them; and they cast lots for my clothes. And so the soldiers did this
. And there near the cross of Jesus were standing, his mother, and his mother's sister, and Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdala
. And Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved, standing near her, and he said to his mother: Woman, behold, your son
. And he said to that disciple: Behold, your mother. And from that moment, the disciple took her with him
. After these things, Jesus knew that every thing had now been completed; and, that the scripture might be fulfilled, he said: I thirst
And a jar was standing there, full of vinegar. And they filled a sponge with the vinegar, and put it on a hyssop stalk, and brought it up to his mouth
. And when Jesus had taken the vinegar, he said: It is Done. And he bowing his head, he gave up his spirit
And because it was the eve of preparation, the Jews said: These bodies should not stay on their crosses, because the Sabbath was dawning, and the day of that Sabbath was a special day. And they asked from Pilate that they might break the legs of those crucified, and take them down
. And the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him
. But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead; and they did not break his legs
. But one of the soldiers wounded his side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water
. And the one who saw it, has testified, and his testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth, that you also may believe
. For these things happened, that the scripture might be fulfilled, which said: Not a bone of him shall be broken
. And again another scripture, which says: They will look at him, whom they pierced
After these things, Joseph of Ramath, - for he was a disciple of Jesus, and kept it secret for fear of the Jews, - asked from Pilate, that he might take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate gave permission. And so he came, and carried away the body of Jesus
And there came also Nicodemus, - he who previously had come to Jesus by night, - and he brought with him a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds
. and they took away the body of Jesus, and wound it in linens and spices, as is the Jewish burial custom
. And there was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified, and in the garden was a new tomb which no man had yet been laid in
. And they laid Jesus there, because the Sabbath had begun, and because the tomb was near

Chapter 20

On the first day of the week, Mary Magdala came in the morning while it was still dark, to the tomb, and she saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb

And she ran and came to Simon Kephas, and to that other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them: They have taken away our Lord from the tomb, and I do not know where they have taken him

. And Simon set out, and the other disciple, and came to the tomb

. And they both ran together; but that disciple ran ahead of Simon, and arrived first at the tomb

. And he peered in, and saw the linens laying there, but he did not go in

, And Simon came after him, and he entered the tomb, and saw the linens laying there

. and the burial cloth that had been wrapped around his head was not with the linens, but was folded up, and set aside in another place

. Then, too, entered the disciple who arrived first at the tomb, and he saw, and believed

. For they had not yet understood the scriptures, that he was to rise from the dead
. And those disciples went away again back to their place
But Mary stayed standing by the tomb, and weeping, and as she wept, she peered into the tomb
. and saw two angels in white, who were sitting, one at his headrest and one at the foot of where the body of Jesus had laid
And they said to her: Woman, why do you weep? She said to them: Because they have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him
. Having said this, she turned around behind her, and saw Jesus standing, but did not know that it was Jesus
Jesus said to her: Woman, why do you weep ? and, for whom do you look ? And she thought that he was the gardener, and she said to him: Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will go and take him away
. Jesus said to her: Mary! And she turned, and said to him, Rabbuli ! - which means "My Teacher" in Hebraic
Jesus said to her: Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to my Father. But go to my brothers, and say to them: I ascend to my Father and your Father, and to my God and your God
. Then came Mary Magdala, and told the disciples that she had seen our Lord, and that he had said these things to her
And on the evening of that first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came in, and stood among them, and said to them: Peace be with you
. Having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. And the disciples rejoiced, when they saw our Lord
. And Jesus said to them; Peace be with you. As my Father has sent me, so, too, I send you
. And as he said these things, he breathed on them, and said to them: Receive you the Holy Spirit
If you will forgive a man of his sins, they will be forgiven him, and if you will retain the sins of a man, they will be retained
. Now Thomas, one of the twelve called the Twin, was not there with them, when Jesus came in
And the disciples said to him: We have seen our Lord. But he said to them: Unless I see the holes of the nails in his hands, and put my fingers into them, and put my hand to his side, I will not believe
And after eight days, the disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them: and Jesus came in while the doors were closed, stood among them, and said to them: Peace be with you
And he said to Thomas: Put your finger here, and look at my hands; and take your hand and put it into my side, and do not be a doubter, but a believer
! And Thomas answered, and said to him: My Lord, and my God
. Jesus said to him: Now that you have seen me, you believe, blessed are they who do not see me, yet believe
. And many other miracles did Jesus do before his disciples, which are not written in this book
But these are written, that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God; and that when you believe, you may have Eternal Life in his name

Chapter 21

: After this, Jesus revealed himself again to his disciples, at the sea of Tiberias, and he appeared now in this manner

There were together, Simon Kephas, and Thomas called the Twin, and Nathaniel who was of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two other of the disciples

Simon Kephas said to them: I will go catch fish. They said to him: We will go with you. And they went, and boarded a boat, and that night, they caught nothing

. And when it was morning, Jesus stood on the shore of the sea, and the disciples did not know that it was Jesus

. And Jesus said to them: Lads, have you any thing to eat? They say to him: No

He said to them: Cast your net on the right side of the boat, and you'll find some. And they cast; and they could not draw up the net, because of the catch of fish it held

And that disciple whom Jesus loved, said to Kephas That is our Lord. And Simon, when he heard that it was our Lord, took his robe, and covered himself, - for he had nothing on, - and dove himself into the sea, to go to Jesus

But the other disciples came on in the boat, - for they were not very far from the land, only about a hundred yards, - and they hauled the net in with the fish

. And when they came to land, they saw burning coals set, and fish laid on top of them, and some bread
. And Jesus said to them: Bring some of the fish which you have just caught
And Simon Kephas went aboard, and dragged the net ashore, full of huge fish, one hundred and fifty-three. And even with all this weight, the net had not torn
. And Jesus said to them: Come and have breakfast. And not one of the disciples was bold enough to ask him who he was; for they knew that it was our Lord
. And Jesus came over, and took the bread and fish, and gave some to his disciples
. This is the third time that Jesus appeared to his disciples when he had risen from the dead
And after the meal, Jesus said to Simon Kephas: Simon, son of Jonas, Do you love me, more than these others do? He said to him: Yes, Lord: you know that I love you. Jesus said to him: Tend my lambs for me
Again, he said it to him a second time: Simon, son of Jonas, Do you love me ? He said to him: Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him: Tend my sheep for me
Again, Jesus said it to him a third time: Simon, son of Jonas, love you me? And it saddened Kephas that he said it to him a third time, Do you love me; and he said to him: Lord, you understand all things, you know that I love you. Jesus said to him: Tend my sheep for me
Truly, truly I say to you: When you were young, you put on your own belt, and walked where it pleased you: but when you will be old, you will reach out your hands, and another will put your belt on you, and will take you where you would rather not go
. And this he said, so he might show by what death he was to glorify God. And having said these things, he said to him: Come, Follow me
And Simon turned himself, and he saw coming after him that disciple whom Jesus loved, who had leaned back on Jesus at the supper, and said, Lord, who is it that will betray you
? And Kephas saw him, and said to Jesus: Lord, what about this man
. Jesus said to him: If I want him to stay here until I come, what is that to you ? You follow me
And the rumor went out among the brothers, that this disciple would not die. Yet Jesus did not say, that he would not die; but, "If I want him to stay here until I come, what is that to you"
. This is the disciple who has witnessed abut all these things, and has written them down, and we know that his testimony is true
And there were many other things that Jesus did; if all were written down, the world itself, I suppose, would not hold all the books that would be written
