Chapter 5

. And he came to the other shore of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes
. And as he went out of the boat, there met him a man from the tombs, in whom was an unclean spirit
: And he lived in the place of tombs; and no one could restrain him with chains
because, as often as he had been bound with restraints and chains, he had broken the chains and broke the restraints: and no one could tame him
. And constantly, by night and day, amid the tombs, he screamed and gashed himself with stones
; And when he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran up and did homage him
and shrieked with a loud voice, and said: What have you to do with me, Jesus, you Son of the High God ? I implore you by God, that you not torment me
. For he had said to him: Unclean spirit, come out of the man
. And he asked him: What is your name? And he answered him: Our name is Legion; for we are many
. And he pleaded earnestly with him, that he would not send him away from that country
. And there was there by the mountain, a great herd of pigs grazing
. And the demons pleaded with him, and said: Send us upon those pigs, that we may enter them
And he allowed them to. And those unclean spirits went out, and entered the pigs: and the herd, of about two thousand, ran to a cliff, and fell into the sea, and were drown in the waters
. And they who tended them, fled and spoke of it in the town and in the villages: and they came out to see what had happened
And they came to Jesus, and saw him who had been possessed, in who had been the legion, clothed, and sane, and sitting, and they became afraid
. And those who had seen it told them what happened to the one who had the demons, and also concerning the pigs
. And they began to beg him, that he would go from their district
. And as he boarded the boat, the man who had demons asked that he might proceed with him
. And he granted him not, but said to him: Go home to your people, and tell them what the Lord has done for you, and has had compassion you
. And he went, and began to proclaim in Decapolis, what Jesus had done for him. And they were all amazed
. And when Jesus had crossed by boat to the other side, great crowds again gathered about him as he was on the shore of the water
And one of the heads of the synagogue, whose name was Jairus, came, and, on seeing him, fell at his feet,
. and pleaded earnestly with him, and said to him: My daughter is very sick; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will be cured, and will live
. And Jesus went with him; and a large crowd followed him, and pressed all around him
, And a woman who had hemorrhaged for twelve years
and who had suffered much from many physicians, and had spent all she had, and benefited not, but was even more afflicted
when she heard of Jesus, came behind him in the push of the crowd, and touched his cloak
. For she said: If I just touch his clothes, I shall live
. And immediately the flow of her blood dried up; and she felt in her body that she was cured of her plague
? And Jesus at once knew in himself, that healing power had left from him, and he turned to the crowd, and said: Who touched my clothes
? And his disciples said to him: You see the crowd that pushes in on you; and you say, Who touched me
. And he looked all around to see who had done this
And the woman, fearful and trembling, for she realized what had taken place in her, came and fell down before him, and told him the whole truth
. And he said to her: My daughter, your faith has cured you: go in peace; and be freed of your illness
? And while he was speaking, some of the house of the head of the synagogue came, and said: Your daughter is dead: why trouble the teacher
. But Jesus heard the words they spoke, and said to the head of the synagogue: Do not fear; only believe
. And he asked that no one to go with him, except Simon Kephas, and James, and John the brother of James
And they came to the house of the head of the synagogue; and he saw, that they were in a tumult, and weeping, and wailing.
And he entered in and said to them: Why do you make a commotion, and weep? The child is not dead, but is asleep
At this they laughed at him. But Jesus put them all out. And he took the girl's father, and her mother, and his companions, and entered into where the child lay
. And he took the child's hand, and said to her: Little girl, get up
And immediately the child got up, and walked; for she was twelve years old. And they were astonished beyond belief
. And he enjoined them strictly, that no one should know of it. And he ordered that they should give her something to eat

Chapter 6

. And Jesus departed from there and came to his own town, and his disciples followed him
And when the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue. And many who heard him were astonished, and said: Where did he get all this ? And what kind of wisdom is this, which is given to him! and that such miracles are done by his hands
? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James and of Joses and of Judas and of Simon ? And are not his sisters here with us And they were confounded by him.
. And Jesus said to them: There is no prophet who is without honor, except in his own town, and among his relatives, and at home
. And he could not there do even one miracle, apart from a few sick when he laid his hand on them, and healed them
. And he worried at the lack of their faith. And he traveled about the villages and taught
. And he called his twelve, and began to send them forth, in pairs; and he gave them authority over unclean spirits, to expel them
And he commanded them to take nothing for the journey, except a staff only; neither a satchel, nor bread, nor coin in their purses
. but to wear sandals, and not bring two coats
. And he said to them: Into whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave the place
And whoever will not receive you, nor hear you, when you go out from that place shake off the dust that is under your feet, for a testimony towards them. Truly I say to you, There will be relief for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment rather than to be that town
. And they went out and proclaimed the need of repentance
. And they expelled many demons, and many of the sick they anointed with oil, and cured them
And Herod the king heard of Jesus, for his name had become known to him, and he said: John the Baptist has risen from the dead, and that is why miraculous works are done by him
. Others said: He is Elijah: and others: He is a prophet equal to any one of the prophets
. But when Herod heard of him, he said:  He is that John who I beheaded: he has risen from the dead
For Herod had sent and arrested John and threw him in prison, on account of Herodias, his brother Philips wife, whom he had taken
. For John had said to Herod: It is not permitted for you to take your brother's wife
. And Herodias herself was an enemy to him, and wished to kill him, but was unable
For Herod was afraid of John, knowing him to be a just and holy man: and he watched him, and listened to him in many things and did thus, and he heard him with interest
And there was a special day, when Herod made a banquet, in his own house, for his nobles and the officers and the heads of Galilee
And the daughter of Herodias came in, and danced; and she pleased Herod and those reclining with him. And the king said to the maiden: Ask of me what you please, and I will give it you
. And he swore to her: Whatever you should ask, I will give you, even to half my kingdom
And she went out, and said to her mother: What should I ask him for ? She said to her: The head of John the Baptist
And she soon hurried back to the king, and said: I desire that you, this moment, give me on a platter, the head of John the Baptist
, And the king bitterly regretted the request, but due to the oath, and on account of the guests, he would not deny her
and the king immediately sent an executioner, and ordered to him to bring the head of John. And he went, and beheaded John in the prison
. and brought it on a platter, and gave it to the maiden; and the maiden gave it to her mother
. And his disciples heard; they came and took away the body and laid it in a Tomb
. And the Apostles gathered before Jesus, and reported all they had done, and all they had taught
And he said to them: Come, let us go by ourselves into a desert and rest a some. For there were many coming and going, and they had not time to even to eat bread
. And they went by boat to a deserted place by themselves
. But many saw them as they  departed, and knew of it; and from all the towns, they ran there by land before him
And Jesus disembarked and saw great crowds: and he pitied them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. And he began to teach them many things
. And when the time was getting late, his disciples came to him, and said to him: This is a deserted place, and the time is getting late
. Dismiss them, that they may go into the fields around us and into the villages, and may buy themselves something to eat
? And he said to them: You give them something to eat. They say to him: Should we go and buy bread for two hundred denarii, and give them that to eat
. And he said to them: Go and see how many loaves you have here. And when they had, they said to him: Five loaves and two fish
. And he told them make the people sit on the grass by groups
. And they sat by groups of a hundred, and of fifty
And he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looked towards heaven, and blessed and broke the bread, and gave to his disciples to put before them: and they divided the two fish among them all
. And they all ate, and were filled
. And they took up twelve baskets full of the scraps and of the fish
. And those who had eaten bread were five thousand men
. And he immediately insisted his disciples go by boat before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowds
. And when he had taken leave of them, he went to a mountain to pray
. And when evening came, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and him alone on land
And he saw them straining themselves rowing; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came to them walking on the water; and he came to walk by them
. And they saw him walking on the water, and they thought that he was a ghost: and they cried out
For they all saw him and were afraid. And he hastened to speak to them, and said to them: Be brave; it is I; do not fear
. And he got into the boat with them; and the wind died down. And they were truly awed and astonished among themselves
. For they had not understood about the bread; because they had closed minds
. And when they had made the other shore, they came to the land of Gennesaret
. And when they got out of the ship, immediately the men of the place recognized him
And they ran throughout that region, and began to bring to them that were sick, carrying them on beds to where they heard he was
And wherever he entered into villages or towns, the sick were put in the streets, and begged that they might touch just the tassel of his cloak. And all they that touched him were cured

Chapter 7

. And there gathered near him Pharisees and scribes who had come from Jerusalem
. And they saw some of his disciples eating bread with unwashed hands; and they questioned it
For all the Jews and the Pharisees, do not eat unless they carefully wash their hands; because they hold fast to the custom of their ancestors
And from the marketplace, they do not eat without washing their hands to the wrist. And there are many other things which they have custom to observe, as the ablution of cups, and of pots, and of brass vessels, and of seats
? And the scribes and Pharisees asked him: Why do your disciples not walk in the way of the custom of the ancestors, but eat bread with unwashed hands
And he said to them: How well Isaiah prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written: This people honors me with its lips, but their heart is far from me
. And empty is their reverence, while teaching as doctrines merely the regulations of men
For you disregard the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men, the ablution of cups, and of pots, and many things like these
! He said to them: You make an art of setting aside the precept of God, so that you may keep your tradition
. For Moses said: Honor your father and your mother; and whoever shall curse his father or his mother, shall be put to death
: But you say: If a man says to his father or to his mother, Be it my obligation whatever you may be given from me
. then you ask him not to do any thing more for his father or his mother
. And you reject the word of God, on account of the custom which you hand down. And many things like these you do
. And Jesus called all the crowd, and said to them: Hear me, all of you; and try to understand
. There is nothing outside a man which by entering him, can pollute him. But that which comes out of him, that it is that pollutes a man
. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear
. And when Jesus had entered the house, away from the crowd, his disciples asked him about this parable
? And he said to them: Are you likewise unable discern ? Do you not know, that whatever from outside enters into a man cannot make him impure
. For it does not enter into his heart, but into his belly, and is rendered to be carried off of all that is eaten
. But that which becomes from a man, that defiles a man
, For from within, from the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adultery, fornication
. theft, murder, avarice, malice, deceit, lust, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, an obtuse spirit
. All these evils come from within, and defile a man
Then Jesus got up, and went to the border of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house, and wanted none to recognize him; but he could not escape notice
, Soon a woman, whose daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him; and she came, and fell before his feet
. The woman was a Gentile from Phenicia of Syria), and begged him to expel the demon from her daughter
. Jesus said to her: Allow the children first to be filled; for it is not right to take the children's bread and cast it to dogs
. And she replied, and said to him: Please, my Lord: even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs
. Jesus said to her: Go ! for such a reply, the demon has left from your daughter
. And she went to her house, and found her daughter lying on a bed, and the demon gone of her
. Again Jesus left from the border of Tyre and Sidon, and came to the sea of Galilee, to the border of Decapolis
. And they brought to him a deaf and stammering man, and begged him to lay his hand on him
, And he led him away  from the crowd,  and put his  fingers into his ears, and touched his tongue, and spit
. and looked towards heaven, and groaned, and said to him: Be opened
. And immediately his ears were opened, and his tongue was freed, and he spoke plainly
. And he ordered them to tell no man of it: and the more he ordered them, the more they proclaimed it
. And they admired him beyond bounds, and said:  He does every thing well: he makes the deaf hear, and the mute talk

Chapter 8

: And about that time, when the crowd was large, and had nothing to eat, he called his disciples, and said to them
. I pity this crowd; for three days they have been with with me, and they have nothing to eat
. And if I send them to their homes hungry, they will faint by the way. Some of them have come from a great distance
? His disciples say to him: Where, here in the desert, can one satisfy all these with bread
. And he asked them: How many loaves do you have ? They say to him, Seven
And he ordered the crowds to sit on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, blessed and broke them, and gave to his disciples to hand out; and they handed them out to the crowds
. And there were a few fish; and he also blessed them, and ordered them handed out
. And they ate, and were filled: and they took up seven baskets of the remaining scraps
. And the men who had eaten were about four thousand: and he sent them away
. And thereon he entered a boat, with his disciples, and came to the place Dalmanutha
. And the Pharisees came out, and began to debate with him; and, to test him, they demanded of him a sign from heaven
And he breathed a sigh, and said: Why does this generation look for a sign ? Truly I say to you, No sign will be given to this generation
. And he left them, and left in the boat; and they passed to the other shore
. And they had forgot to take the bread with them, and had but a single loaf in the ship with them
. And he ordered them, and said to them: Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod
? And they thought to one another, and said: Is it because we have no bread
And Jesus knew it, and said to them: Why do you suppose you have no bread ? Do you still not know, nor understand? How long will you be so stubborn
? and you have eyes, but see not ? and have ears, but hear not, nor understand
. When I broke the five loaves to five thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you take up ? They say to him: Twelve
. He said to them. And when the seven to four thousand, how many baskets full of scraps did you take up ? They say: Seven
? He said to them: Why is it that, up to this time, you do not comprehend
. And he came to Bethsaida : and they brought to him a blind man, and begged him to touch him
. And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the village, and laid on his hand and spit on his eyes: and asked him what he saw
. And he looked, and said: I see men like trees which walk
. Again he laid his hand on his eyes, and he was restored, and saw every thing clearly
. And he sent him to his house, and said to him: Do not enter into the village, nor tell any person in the village
? And Jesus and his disciples went to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And he asked his disciples of them along the way: Who do men say that I am
And they said to him: That you are John the Baptist; and others: That you are Elijah; and others: That you are one of the prophets
Jesus said to them: And who do you yourselves say I am ? Simon replied, and said to him: You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God
. And he ordered them that they should say this of him to no person
And he began to teach them, that the Son of Man had to suffer much, and be rejected by the  elders and by the high priests and by the scribes, and be killed, and rise on the third day
. And he spoke out about it openly. And Kephas took him, and began to remonstrate him
But he turned, and looked upon his disciples, and reprimanded Simon, and said: Get you behind me, Satan: for you do not judge what is of God, but what is of men
And Jesus called the crowd, together with his disciples, and said to them: Whoever will follow me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me
. For whoever will save his life, shall lose it; and whoever will lose his life on my account, and on account of the gospel, shall save it
? For what will profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his life
? Or what will a man offer in exchange for his life
For if any shall be ashamed of me, and of my words, in this faithless and corrupt generation, also will the Son of Man be ashamed of him, when he comes in the glory of his Father, with his holy angels
